🚨 Thailand–Myanmar Tensions Escalate!! “Parit” Confirms People’s Party Opposition to Welcoming “Min Aung Hlaing,” Citing ASEAN Consensus
Bangkok — August 9, 2026, 12:10 p.m.
The reception of Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s president, has become a heated political issue in Thailand after Parit Wacharasindhu, a party-list MP and deputy leader of the People’s Party, reaffirmed the party’s position that it disagrees with the Thai government’s decision to welcome the Myanmar leader in such a manner.
Parit made the remarks at Parliament following criticism surrounding Anusorn Thammajai, a Bangkok MP from the People’s Party, who staged a symbolic protest against Parliament’s reception of Min Aung Hlaing. The action had prompted questions over whether the People’s Party had been sufficiently vocal in opposing the visit.
Parit confirmed that the position was that of the party and said Anusorn’s action was one of the ways party members could express their disagreement. He described it as a peaceful protest against the decision of the President of Parliament.
🔥 People’s Party: Thailand Should Not Ignore the International Community’s Position
Parit explained that the People’s Party opposed the reception of Min Aung Hlaing because it viewed the Thai government’s approach as inconsistent with the position of the international community toward the situation in Myanmar.
In particular, he referred to Min Aung Hlaing’s rise to power following the 2021 military coup and allegations of serious human rights violations inside the country.
A key issue raised by Parit was the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, which was established following the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting in April 2021 as a framework for addressing the Myanmar crisis.
The five points call for an immediate cessation of violence, constructive dialogue among all parties, the appointment of an ASEAN special envoy to facilitate dialogue, the provision of humanitarian assistance, and a visit by the special envoy to Myanmar to meet with all relevant parties.
ASEAN has continued to reaffirm the Five-Point Consensus as the main framework for addressing the Myanmar situation, while discussions have also taken place regarding an assessment of progress and possible next steps.
⚡ “Has Myanmar Rejected the Consensus?” — The Question Parit Wants the Government to Answer
Parit questioned that if the Thai government explains its reception of Min Aung Hlaing on the grounds that Thailand is an ASEAN member, the government should clearly answer whether Myanmar has complied with the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus.
The Myanmar government itself issued a statement in July 2026 saying it would cooperate with ASEAN, while maintaining that the process for resolving the crisis must be Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led, while emphasizing sovereignty and the principle of non-interference in domestic affairs.
Meanwhile, a Reuters report stated that although ASEAN continues to use the Five-Point Consensus as its main framework, the Myanmar military’s lack of compliance remains a key factor behind the fact that military-backed leaders have not consistently received the highest level of treatment within ASEAN.
🚨 People’s Party Stresses: “Dialogue Is Possible,” But It Opposes This Form of Reception
However, Parit emphasized that the People’s Party does not reject the need for Thailand to engage in dialogue with Myanmar, as several issues directly affect Thailand’s national interests and the safety of Thai citizens.
Issues requiring dialogue include scam gangs, transnational crime, contaminants in rivers, and problems along the Thailand–Myanmar border.
The Thai government has previously stated that cooperation with Myanmar covers border security, the suppression of transnational crime — particularly online scam networks and drug trafficking — as well as water and air pollution issues.
For the People’s Party, however, negotiations aimed at protecting Thailand’s interests do not necessarily require welcoming Myanmar’s leader at a level that the party considers inconsistent with the current situation and ASEAN’s stated position.
Parit therefore reaffirmed that the People’s Party disagrees with the Thai government’s approach to welcoming Min Aung Hlaing in this manner, while emphasizing that the actions taken by People’s Party MPs constitute peaceful opposition.
The episode highlights a clear difference between the Thai government’s diplomatic approach, which emphasizes engagement with Myanmar’s government to protect Thailand’s interests, and the People’s Party’s position, which calls for Thailand to adhere more firmly to ASEAN principles and the Five-Point Consensus.
