8 September 2026 – Bangkok authorities are investigating oil contamination and a strong petroleum odor detected in the drainage system along Rama III Road after residents reported an unusual smell in the area.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, accompanied by officials from several agencies, inspected the affected area on the evening of 7 September, around the boundary between Khlong Toei and Yan Nawa districts.
Officials found oil residue inside the drainage system and began pumping it out. Oil-absorbent booms were deployed to contain the contamination, while cleaning agents were used to remove the residue. Authorities also monitored volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air as part of safety precautions.
SOURCE OF THE OIL REMAINS UNKNOWN
The key unanswered question is where the oil came from.
Governor Chadchart said the surrounding area includes railway infrastructure and oil-storage facilities, but authorities have not yet confirmed the source of the contamination. An investigation is continuing to trace its origin.
Addressing speculation linking the incident to fuel reserves for data centers, Chadchart said preliminary findings indicated that the oil discovered in the drainage system was not connected to fuel storage for the data-center business.
However, the actual source of the oil remains under investigation.
FIRE RISK: PUBLIC WARNED TO AVOID IGNITION SOURCES
Bangkok authorities have warned people in nearby areas not to light fires, smoke cigarettes, or carry out activities that could produce sparks near drainage openings, due to the potential fire hazard.
Residents who notice a strong petroleum smell are advised to move to a well-ventilated area. Anyone experiencing dizziness, nausea or breathing difficulties should leave the affected area and seek medical attention.
People in Khlong Toei, Yan Nawa and nearby areas who detect oil residue or an unusual petroleum odor can report it through the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration hotline 1555 or Traffy Fondue , available 24 hours a day.
Authorities are continuing efforts to remove the contamination and determine exactly where the oil came from and how it entered Bangkok’s drainage system.
