A major U.S. military movement is drawing attention as the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) and its accompanying Carrier Strike Group are reportedly heading toward Thailand for a port visit next week.
The massive aircraft carrier is carrying more than 5,000 U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel. The Royal Thai Navy has reportedly confirmed that the visit will take place in eastern Thailand, with the stop intended primarily for crew rest, recovery and logistical support following an exceptionally long deployment.
No joint military exercise has been scheduled as part of the port visit.
The USS Abraham Lincoln departed San Diego, California, late last year before its deployment was redirected to the Middle East amid escalating tensions involving Iran. The carrier and its crew subsequently remained at sea for more than 250 days, with an exceptionally long period without a port call.
After the USS George Washington assumed responsibility for U.S. operations in the Middle East, the USS Abraham Lincoln reportedly departed the operational area on August 22 and began its journey back toward the United States, with Thailand expected to serve as its first major rest and replenishment stop before continuing toward the Pacific.
Thai and U.S. authorities have not publicly disclosed the exact date, time or location of the carrier’s port call, citing operational security and military safety concerns.
