TRAT, Thailand — August 24, 2026 — Thai authorities have intercepted a suspected? cross-border weapons-smuggling operation in Trat province, seizing two AK-47 rifles and a total of 24,405 rounds of ammunition following an operation linked to the maritime route near Koh Kood.
According to the Royal Thai Navy and Thai authorities, the operation followed intelligence that a speedboat would travel offshore to collect illegal goods from foreign contacts before bringing them back to shore.
Authorities moved in at around 7:00 p.m. on August 21 at a pier in Khlong Yai Subdistrict, Laem Ngop District, Trat Province. One male suspect was arrested, while other alleged members of the network reportedly escaped during the operation.
The seized items included two AK-47 rifles, 102 AK-47 magazines, 23,640 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and 765 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, bringing the total ammunition seizure to 24,405 rounds. Authorities also seized a speedboat and three vehicles allegedly connected to the operation.
Initial questioning indicated that the speedboat had been used to receive goods from foreign individuals at sea. Authorities said the items had been transported from the Cambodian side before being brought into Thailand. Investigators are continuing to trace the source, intended destination and other members of the network.
The seizure comes as the Thai government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul continues to tighten firearms controls. In February, Anutin signed an order temporarily suspending the issuance of Type 12 firearm-carrying permits for one year. The government has subsequently emphasized that its broader policy targets both illegal firearms and firearms legally registered to civilians, including tighter controls over possession, carrying and use.
However, the government has not announced a blanket ban on civilian firearm ownership. Officials have specifically cautioned against interpreting the current policy as a complete prohibition in every circumstance while new firearms legislation remains under development.
The latest seizure therefore raises a separate security question: how effectively can authorities prevent illegal military-grade weapons and ammunition from entering Thailand through cross-border trafficking networks?
Investigators are expected to continue tracing the source, organizers, recipients and intended destination of the seized weapons. At this stage, claims about a specific final destination or a connection to particular armed groups remain unconfirmed.
