AUCKLAND, August 21, 2026 — Thailand and New Zealand are preparing to elevate their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership as the two countries mark 70 years of diplomatic ties.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is visiting New Zealand from August 20 to 22 for talks with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. New Zealand says the visit will be used to formally launch the partnership and pursue a goal of tripling two-way trade by 2045.
Cooperation is expected to cover security, transnational crime, education, innovation and people-to-people links. Thailand has also identified direct Bangkok–Auckland flights and closer police cooperation as areas to advance.
The partnership is being elevated during the visit, while individual commercial and policy outcomes should be assessed separately as they are announced.
