A remarkable liver cancer surgery has drawn widespread attention online after the “Liver Surgery Doctor” page shared images of a massive liver tumor measuring approximately 30 centimeters (nearly 1 foot) that was successfully removed from a patient’s abdomen.
The complex operation took more than six hours, according to information released by Dr. Ban Wittayachanakul, a surgeon specializing in the liver, pancreas and biliary tract.
The case was particularly challenging because of the tumor’s enormous size and its compression of major veins. Surgeons therefore had to proceed with extreme caution to safely remove the mass.
The patient reportedly lost approximately 1,500 cc of blood during the operation. However, the tumor was successfully removed and the patient was reported to be safe following surgery.
Doctors also warned that Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C infections are major risk factors for liver cancer. In particular, people infected with Hepatitis B can develop liver cancer even at a relatively young age.
Other risk factors include chronic alcohol consumption, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, obesity and diabetes, all of which can increase the risk of serious liver disease and liver cancer.
The case serves as an important health warning: people in high-risk groups should consult a doctor and undergo regular screening as recommended. Liver cancer may cause few or no obvious symptoms during its early stages.
