Thailandâs family structure is undergoing a major transformation as more people from Generation Y are becoming single parents, with economic pressure and unhealthy relationships emerging as key factors behind the shift.
For many Gen Y adults, the decision to leave a relationship is no longer simply about falling out of love. Rising living costs, financial pressure and debt, combined with toxic relationships involving controlling behavior, infidelity and long-running conflicts, are increasingly putting relationships under severe strain.
Some parents are choosing to end relationships they believe are damaging to themselves and their children, and instead move forward as single mothers or single fathers, taking responsibility for raising their children on their own.
But becoming a single parent comes with enormous challenges. Parents may have to shoulder income, household expenses, childcare, housework and full-time employment largely by themselves, leaving little time for rest or personal life.
At the same time, societyâs perception of single-parent families is changing. Raising a child alone is increasingly viewed not necessarily as a âfamily failure,â but as a courageous decision to prioritize a childâs safety, emotional well-being and quality of life.
The growing number of single-parent households presents a major challenge for Thai society: As economic pressures intensify and relationships become increasingly fragile, how will Thailand support families raising children on their own?
