Thailandâs security situation in the southern border provinces remains under close watch following a series of incidents at multiple locations. Authorities are investigating who was behind the attacks and why particular targets were selected.
National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Chatichai Bangchuad said reports referring to more than 51 locations needed to be broken down by the nature and severity of each incident. Not every incident should be counted as a major attack.
According to Chatichai, when focusing on incidents that caused damage to property or affected important targets, there were approximately 15 major locations. Some incidents, such as the burning of vehicle tires, should not be counted in the same category as major attacks.
ðĨ Why were local administrative offices targeted?
One key issue under investigation is the apparent targeting of local administrative organization offices (TAOs).
The NSC chief said the latest incidents did not appear to directly target civilian lives. He noted that there had been no reported deaths from this series of attacks, although some shops and government facilities were damaged.
Security authorities are therefore examining why TAO offices were selected as targets and whether the choice provides clues about the motive and those involved.
â ïļ NSC: âDo not assume it was BRN aloneâ
Chatichai stressed that authorities should not automatically attribute all of the incidents to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) or any single organization.
He said there could be what authorities describe as âintervening threatsâ, including criminal groups and illegal networks operating in the area. Investigators need to establish whether such networks have overlapping interests before identifying those responsible.
The NSCâs preliminary assessment is that the attacks may have been a symbolic retaliation against the state, following heightened tensions after the deaths of five paramilitary soldiers.
However, the NSC chief emphasized that this assessment does not establish that BRN alone was responsible.
ðđð Anutin orders stronger intelligence operations
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has instructed security agencies to intensify intelligence operations, particularly efforts to identify the groups behind the incidents.
Chatichai said intelligence agencies have some information regarding possible trends, but accurately predicting the exact date, time and location of an attack remains difficult.
The authorities are therefore expected to strengthen coordination among the military, police and civilian administration, while increasing security measures for local communities.
Border surveillance will also be strengthened to prevent the movement of suspects or illegal materials from outside the country. Authorities are also expected to coordinate with Malaysia.
Regarding security concerns surrounding the upcoming mobile Cabinet meeting in Songkhla, Chatichai said security agencies were prepared and that the situation would not affect the meeting.
The NSC chief said the governmentâs immediate priority was to rapidly clarify the incidents and ensure that any action possible under the law produces concrete results.
What remains unclear
The investigation is still developing. The 15 major locations, the targeting of TAO offices, and the possibility of involvement by criminal or other networks are among the key issues under examination.
At this stage, the reported assessment that the attacks may have been a symbolic response should be treated as an official preliminary assessment, not a confirmed attribution of responsibility.
