BANGKOK, August 20, 2026 — Thailand’s chief negotiator for the southern peace process has signalled a possible change in Bangkok’s approach to the long-running conflict.
Thanut Suvarnananda told Reuters the government wants to address deeper political grievances and governance issues, rather than focus mainly on trading concessions for reductions in violence.
The peace process involves Thailand and the BRN, with Malaysia acting as facilitator.
The development does not mean Thailand has agreed to autonomy, decentralisation or amnesty.
