A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, causing widespread damage across several cities, collapsing buildings and trapping residents beneath the rubble. Emergency rescue teams are continuing search-and-rescue operations as authorities assess the full extent of the disaster.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 12:34 UTC on August 10, 2026, or approximately 7:34 a.m. local time in Colombia.

The epicenter was located approximately 5 kilometers east of San José del Palmar, at a depth of around 107 kilometers.

💥 Strong Tremors Hit Several Cities

Reports indicate that several major cities in western Colombia, including Cali and Pereira, were affected by the earthquake.

Numerous buildings reportedly collapsed or sustained severe structural damage. In Cali, at least 20 buildings were reported to have collapsed, with residents believed to be trapped inside some of the affected structures.

Emergency personnel have been deployed to search damaged buildings and rescue survivors.

⚠️ Death Toll Remains Uncertain

Early posts circulating after the earthquake reported an initial death toll of 20 people, which was consistent with some preliminary accounts.

However, the situation has continued to develop rapidly.

Later reports put the number of fatalities at at least 47, while some of the most recent reports cited a death toll of at least 50 people.

For this reason, the figure of 20 fatalities should only be described as an initial or preliminary estimate, rather than the latest confirmed death toll.

Tremors from the earthquake were also reportedly felt in neighboring Ecuador.

Search-and-rescue operations remain underway across affected areas, and authorities have warned that the number of casualties and the scale of damage could continue to change as more information becomes available.
