Thailand is considering a new approach to ending the prolonged conflict in its southern border provinces, shifting the focus from short-term agreements toward political grievances and possible governance reforms.

Chief peace negotiator Thanut Suvarnananda said representatives linked to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional, or BRN, could be included in discussions concerning decentralisation. Amnesty or pardons for some suspects may also be considered as part of the peace process.

More than 7,800 people have reportedly been killed since the insurgency intensified in 2004. Malaysia has facilitated negotiations since 2013, but political instability and recurring violence have repeatedly interrupted progress.

The decisive test will be whether all parties can transform dialogue into practical measures that protect civilians, reduce violence and build trust within local communities.
